Measuring for draperies can seem intimidating, but it’s actually a simple process. Here’s how to do it:
  1. Determine the mounting location: Decide where you want to mount the drapery rod. Typically, it’s mounted 4-6 inches above the window frame and extends 4-6 inches beyond each side of the frame. This creates a larger visual area for the window and allows the drapes to be opened without blocking the window.

  2. Measure the width: Measure the width of the window or the area you want to cover with the drapes. To achieve a full, gathered look, add 8-12 inches to the width of the window. If you want a more tailored look, add 2-3 inches.

  3. Measure the length: Measure the length of the window or the distance from the mounting location to where you want the drapes to fall. For a standard floor length, measure from the mounting location to the floor. If you want a puddled or pooled effect, add 4-6 inches to the length.

  4. Consider the style: Consider the style of drapery you want to use. If you’re using a standard rod pocket style, you’ll need to add an additional 1-2 inches to the length to allow for the pocket. If you’re using a grommet style, you won’t need to add any additional length.

  5. Check for clearance: Make sure there is enough clearance for the drapes to hang properly. If you have furniture or other obstacles, you may need to adjust the mounting location or choose a different style of drapery.

  6. Once you have your measurements, you can purchase the appropriate size of drapery panels and a rod that will fit your window or space.
